Dr. David Shaw was born in Nottingham, UK before moving to Perth as a child in 1988. After completing a Physical and Health Education degree at UWA in 2003, he spent 11 years overseas during which time he fell into theological studies, completing an MDiv in Seoul, South Korea and later, a PhD focussed on the Letter of 1 Peter in Exeter, UK. David has pastored expatriate congregations in Seoul, and most recently served as Pastor for Community and Families at Providence City Church. Now at PBC, David is looking forward to teaching Biblical Studies and Christian Ministry, always with a view to encouraging the growth of students into an evermore vibrant faith, hope, and love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
An accidental theologian
In many respects, David feels like an accidental theologian. Growing up he was always into sport and loved the idea of sharing that passion with kids by being a high school physical education teacher. After not finding employment in his chosen field, David went to South Korea on a whim in 2004 to teach English for one year. Little did he know that one year adventure would end up being 11 years and end up with two theological degrees and work in pastoral and academic ministry! David still enjoys his sport, but he takes more pleasure in seeing students unlock the treasures of the Bible as they grow in their knowledge and love of Jesus.
Research & Writing
David continues to pursue research in the area of New Testament Studies and especially 1 Peter. He has a particular interest in how the authors of the NT use the OT narrative to shape the identity and mission of the church-at-large, and welcomes research students with an interest in these areas. David is also an occasional writer at the Gospel Coalition Australia. See here for David’s various publications.
Outside of college
David is an avid runner and you’ll see him most Saturday mornings at his local parkrun. His favourite current podcast is The Rest is History, and he loves watching his wife and children excel in their chosen passions. David says life is too short for bad coffee.
How does David think PBC equips students to serve God’s purposes in our generation?
David believes that PBC equips students to serve God’s purposes by providing a robust theological education that integrates academic rigor with practical ministry training. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the biblical narrative and developing a strong sense of missional identity, enabling students to engage effectively with contemporary cultural contexts. Dr. Shaw’s own teaching and research at PBC focuses on helping students grasp the transformative power of Scripture, encouraging them to embody the gospel in their daily lives and ministries.
